Winrow Celebrates As Series Draws To A Close

After a four week break the 2009 ACU British MMX Quad Championship headed to Oxfordshire for the ninth and final round of the series at the weekend, the hard working NORA-MX Club promoting the event at the challenging Culham Motocross Park on the banks of the River Thames on Sunday the 20th of September.

Having already comfortably secured a record tenth British Championship title at the previous round in Blaxhall Pits, Paul Winrow and his Winrow Honda team-mate Giles Davis travelled to the “old school” venue focused on delivering a good result to end the year on a high, and as the dust settled after a hectic days racing it had been a slightly bittersweet result for the team, Paul tying for 3rd on points and only missing out on another podium finish on the countback rule, while Giles sat out the meeting after a mechanical problem cut short his efforts early in the day.

Clear blue skies and glorious sunshine was the order of the day as the twenty-seven strong field took to the line for timed qualification, Paul struggling to get a clear track for a flying lap around the modified layout and posting 8th fastest time, while Giles was forced to pull in on his first flying lap and with no spare bike had to call it a day.  As the gates dropped for the first of two twenty-five minute plus two lap races, Paul got fantastic drive off the line with the SCT tuned TRX450R blasting up the uphill start to lead the field out on the first of fifteen laps.  Quickly adapting to the tough conditions and with the Winrow Honda working well around the varied terrain, Paul found a comfortable pace in the opening laps as he became embroiled in a three-way tussle for the lead, running in 3rd as the race approached half distance.  Maintaining his pace as the race progressed while others around him tired and began to wilt, Paul moved back to 2nd as the clock counted down and the two-lap board came out, Paul circulating at a frantic pace and reducing the deficit to the rider in front from five seconds to less than a second at the chequered flag much to the delight of the large crowd of spectators in attendance.

Sporting a newly designed Answer Racing kit to match his new liveried graphics kit in celebration of his tenth British Championship title, Paul got a poor start by his standards to the final outing of the day and slotted in to 10th on the opening lap.  With overtaking opportunities few and far between on the tight and twisty circuit, Paul used the excellent handling of the Lonestar / PEP suspension to attack the rougher areas of the circuit and began to make his way up the leaderboard, running 8th as the race crossed half distance.  Now embroiled in a four way tussle for position with the other three riders all battling to secure a higher overall finish in the series, Paul’s years of experience came to the fore as he eased his pace to preserve both himself and his machine for the upcoming UEM Quadcross of European Nations the following weekend, Paul taking no unnecessary risks as he cruised to the chequered flag and settling for 7th to take 4th overall on the day.

Paul Winrow

“Today has been a lot of fun and it’s always nice to be able to come to the last round knowing that there is no pressure for maximum points, although you always seem to push for that anyway!  I got a really good start in the first race and was happy to let the other guys through as I knew I’d get back up to them near the end, but unfortunately I got a bad run on a few back markers in key areas in the closing stages and just ran out of time.  My start in the second race was not the best and left me with a lot of work to do, and although I pushed really hard in the early stages and was able to move up some spots, the guys in front were having their own battle for final positions in the Championship, so I thought being able to represent my country in the Quadcross Of European Nations this coming weekend was more important than taking un-necessary risks to get on the podium and just rode my own race to the end.  It’s been a fantastic year and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making Winrow Honda such a success, all my much valued and appreciated sponsors for their fantastic products, help and support throughout the years, and to all my friends and family who have helped me to ten titles, without your help none of this would be possible.”

Giles Davis

“ It’s definitely not the finish to the season that I had anticipated or wanted, but I suppose that’s racing for you and the difficult days make the good days feel all the better.  I’ve still been able to finish 14th in the final positions and qualify for next year, so given the lack of time on a quad in recent years I’m happy with how I’ve progressed through the year.  The Winrow Honda TRX450R is an awesome bike to ride, and I’d like to really thank Paul for all the help and support he’s given me throughout  this year, it’s been a real pleasure and honour to have worked with him and be part of his 10th British Championship winning season.  I’d also like to thank all the various Team sponsors for their fantastic products and support throughout the year, and would like to take this opportunity to wish Paul and the rest of the Great Britain team good luck for the Quadcross Of European Nations in Germany this weekend.”
